Problem solved. I reloaded all the packaged listed as important for the
compiler at http://www.wins.uva.nl/pub/solaris/solaris2.html#q6.2 from
the 2.6 CD and BAM, I can compile again.
special thanks to Carl Brewer for the quick and running email dialog to try
to troubleshoot.
