Thanks to

Stephen Tremain <stephent@kipling.aus.deuba.com>
Casper Dik <casper@holland.sun.com> (no we werent hacked, toor comes
from FreeBSD and the boss liked it - it uses a different shell)
Andre Koopal <andre@NL.UU.NET>

inetd must have been restarted under the toor login and had inherited
the enviroment from toor. I unset the USER enviroment variable, stopped
and started inetd and all was well.

Thanks again
