I had four responses. A big thank you to Christian Masopust for taking out
time to help me. He asked "do you really have a dumb frame buffer or the
better Raptor graphics-card?" I let him know that I did have the Raptor
card, and then he suggested that I install the drivers and the necessary
patches. After looking around the office, I found the drivers to the
graphics card, installed them, and it worked. Also, thanks to Doug Harmon,
Robert Clift, and Sanjaya Srivastava for their responses.
Here was my original posting (summarized):

Here are the followups that I received:

Hi Jason,
do you really have a "dumb frame buffer" installed or do you
have the better 'Raptor' graphic-card installed ? If it's a
raptor, you will need to install special software for it
(should be delivered with your Raptor-card, but be aware that
there's a patch for the raptor-card that must be installed
before the next reboot after installing the software!!).
bye,
Chris
>From Sanjaya Srivastava:
use prtconf to determine the graphics card and then install the
appropritae packages.

Doug Harmon:
I recently put together a new E450 with Sun's 32X graphics card. I had the
same error messages! However, i installed pacthes for the graphics card,
reinstalled the graphics card packages, etc and i still had the same
errors. However, I was still able to run dtlogin and CDE (didn't try
openWindos). I called Sun's tech support and they couldn't help -- they're
"investigating". Please summarize if you find a solution!

Robert Clift:
Make sure that /dev/fb is linked to the real hardware device, such as:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 37 Nov 24 10:58 fb ->
/devices/pci@1f,4000/SUNW,m64B@4:m640
