SUMMARY: Ultra 1 and terminal

I had Wyse 60 terminals which worked fine on Sparc 5s but which
failed to display POST messages when attached to Ultra 1s (though they
functioned fine once Solaris had booted).

The fix was to change an NVRAM parameter:
ttya-rts-dtr-off=false
changed to:
ttya-rts-dtr-off=true

Now, the terminal is fully functional on both an Ultra 1 and on a Sparc 5.

Thanks to John Sullivan <jsullivan@netgenics.com> for the answer.

And regarding other queries, no, I have no frame buffer or Sun keyboard
plugged into these machines.

For additional info, thanks to:
David L. Markowitz <dav@litronic.com>

And, for the record, here are some of my eeprom settings on the Ultra 1.
The Sparc 5 is identical, except that ttya-rtr-dtr-off=false.

ttya-rts-dtr-off=true
ttya-ignore-cd=true
ttya-mode=9600,8,n,1,-
output-device=screen
input-device=keyboard

Original query attached.

Subject: Ultra 1 and terminal

-I have stacks of old Wyse 60 terminals which I use as consoles for my
coven of Sparc 5s and Sparc 20s.

-I've recently acquired some Ultra 1 Model 170Es.

-These Wyse 60 terminals don't see the initial output from an Ultra 1 as
it boots -- they don't see the "can't find screen", OpenBoot banner, POST
output, memory test, etc. The first line they see is from the Unix kernel
-- "configuring interface hme0", etc. They see all this just fine when
attached to my Sparc 5s and 20s.

-Once in Unix, if I drop into OpenBoot, I can see the "ok>" prompt fine
... but as soon as I type "boot" or "reset all", I'm blind again until
Unix starts posting messages to the console.

-Thus, if there are early booting problems, I can't see what is happening.

-I have a Win95 laptop with a terminal emulator as a temporary solution,
but I would like to go back to using my Wyse 60 terminals.

-I have been comparing the output of "eeprom" from a Sparc 5 and an Ultra
1; I don't see much in the way of differences, and certainly nothing which
seems relevant to this situation.

Insights?
