Matt pointed out a better solution (for my specific circumstance) than
to change the HostID:
[The NVRAM/HostID FAQ] should point you to 'hid'.
I've used the dynamic linking library version (uses LD_PRELOAD)
to temporarily move licenses.
It turns out that I was able to return the license server back to operation,
so I didn't need to prepare/use hid. *phew*
