Further replies from David Foster, Sanjiv K. Bhatia, and David H. Brierly
pointed out to me that the environmental variables LPDEST and PRINTER can
interfere with lpadmin operations in just the way I described. After
getting rid of those variables, lpadmin works the way it should. I can
lp to my printers correctly.
For some reason enscript 1.6.1 is still unhappy.
# enscript -P swjet foo
_default: unknown printer
Broken pipe
# enscript -d swjet foo
_default: unknown printer
Broken pipe
However, this works:
# enscript -p - foo | lp -d swjet
