The original problem is shown below. I figured this one out myself -
the solution was to run pkgchk on the LP component packages - SUNWlpr,
SUNWlps, and SUNWlpu. Doing so revealed a permissions and ownership
problem on /var/spool/lp:
Old permissions: drwxrwxr-x lp lp /var/spool/lp
Correct permissions: drwxr-xr-x lp tty /var/spool/lp
Thanks to those who tried to help (Brett Lymn, Charles Smoko,
