SUMMARY: installing patch clusters

Original Question
-----------------
I have a SS10 which is running 2.5.1. It functions as an NFS server. I
plan to patch it with the Recommended/Security patch cluster as well as
Y2K patch cluster.
I did this on a similar machine in single user mode and it took all day
to get thru these patches. This amount of downtime is unacceptable for
this server.
Do others install these patches while running in level 3? I have done
so myself and haven't had a problem yet. How safe is it?
Or do I need to pull out the kernel patches from the cluster and install
these in single user mode and then install other patches while system is
running?

Summary
-------
5 said run level 3 is okay
3 said run level 1 is required
4 said split up the package

Info received from these responses
----------------------------------
>From Rami Dass and Timothy Lindgren:
use the "patchdiag" utility to check what is needed

>From John T. Douglass:
fastpatch program from Casper Dik, available:
 ftp://ftp.wins.uva.nl/pub/solaris/auto-install/

>From Colin Melville:
find . -type f|xargs grep "Reboot the system after patch installation."

So what did I do?
-----------------
Run level 3 worked fine for me (Remember though: your mileage my
vary). I installed Recommened then rebooted. Then I installed Y2K patch
cluster and rebooted again. To speed things up I commented out any
duplicate patches in the Y2K patch_order file.
