Original Post:

What am I missing? I am trying to print from a Sun Ultra Enterprise II
(Solaris 2.5.1) to a Linux machine (RedHat 5.2) with a locally attached
printer.

- The printer is functioning and I can submit jobs to it from the Linux box.

- The Sun box and Linux box can ping each other.

- I registered the Linux box with the print service on the Sun box using
lpsystem -t bsd <linux box>

- I added the remote printer on the Sun box using lpadmin -p <printer name>
-s <remote system>!<remote printer>.

- I enabled and accepted the printer on the Sun box.

- I tried various entries in /etc/hosts.equiv, /etc/hosts.lpd,
/etc/hosts.allow on the Linux box - nothing worked.

Summary:

First, thanks to the several individuals who replied with suggestions. As
it turns out, I fixed it myself by doing something I should have done in
the first place. I added the individual host names of the Sun boxes to the
/etc/hosts.lpd on the Linux box. Originally, I just has an asterisk (*) in
this file based on an example from a SunOS 4.1.1 machine we still have on
the network. Sorry for the waste of bandwidth.
