Thanks for the responses. Key information was Solaris 2.5.1, Flashdisk RAID
with
about 250GB.
Casper Dik indicated that, indeed, newfs is broken in Solaris 2.5.1 and
earlier. He also indicated that fsck does not work properly on large file
systems unless patches are applied for it.
SO! I'll be looking at upgrading to Solaris 2.6+ and patching as necessary.
