Thanks to all who replied.
I have found out that OpenWindows has problems when language/locales
support is set to en_GB.ISO8859_15 (ISO Code set English/Great Britain
including Euro currency support). When I set language to en_GB (Console
login screen - menu Session/Language/; or by setting environment
variables LC_COLLATE, LC_CTYPE, LC_MONETARY, LC_NUMERIC and LC_TIME in
file /etc/default/init to value "en_GB"), OpenWindows starts without any
errors!
Following sun-managers helped me to get on the right way to the
solution:
Stefan Voss <s.voss@terradata.de> suggested to redirect OpenWindows'
output to stderr into a file:
"openwin >& ~/openwin.err". The messages told me that there were no
fonts to use and Xserver exited.
Dave Foster <foster@bial1.ucsd.edu> suggested to use truss to list out
system calls:
"truss -o truss.out /usr/openwin/bin/openwin".
