Thanks to Arthur Darren Dunham <add@netcom.com> for a
fast reply to my speaker/headphones question:

  He suggested audiotool. When I read the man
  page for same, I found out about audiocontrol
  which solves my problem exactly. [independent
  control of speaker and headphones audio output]

Now, on to my annoying keyboard autorepeat problem... :-(
