SUMMARY: Compiling ability on user install - Revisited

Casper Dik was kind enough to pass along a little tip as well as some
additions.

"There's more to it than that (BTW, when running the pkgadd command above,
care shoudl be taken *not* to reinstall packages that are present on
the system or you'll back out patches)

The solaris FAQ says:

6.2) Which packages do I need to install to support a C compiler?

Solaris ships with everything you need, with the exception of the
compiler itself. Solaris ships with the include files, make, an
assembler, linker and libraries. All this stuff lives in
/usr/ccs/bin (add it to your PATH before /usr/ucb if that's in your
PATH as well) /usr/ccs/lib and /usr/include.

If you still can't find it, make sure you have the following
    packages installed on your system:

for tools (sccs, lex, yacc, make, nm, truss, ld, as):
         SUNWbtool, SUNWsprot, SUNWtoo
     for libraries & headers:
         SUNWhea, SUNWarc, SUNWlibm, SUNWlibms
         SUNWdfbh, SUNWcg6h, SUNWxwinc, SUNWolinc,
         SUNWxglh
     for 64 bit development:
         SUNWarcx, SUNWbtoox, SUNWdplx, SUNWscpux, SUNWsprox,
         SUNWtoox, SUNWlmsx, SUNWlmx, SUNWlibCx
     for ucb compat:
         SUNWsra, SUNWsrh"

I know that everything is included on the cd but everything needed is only
installed if you do a Full Install. I did a User Install which does not
include SUNWhea, SUNWarc, SUNWbtool, SUNWlibm, SUNWsprot, SUNWdfbh, or
SUNWcg6h. All of which I needed.

There were 3 in particular which are not included in the url (xwinc, olinc,
and xglh). I don't know enough to know what these do or whether or not I
needed them. I got done what I needed without them (at least I think I got
what I needed) :-\

Mark@zang.com gave me exactly what I was looking for; a list of packages
needed (for any install) that would allow you to compile, including all the
requisite libraries. Below is the url of the list.

Salutations all,

I have a machine that has a user install and I want to be able to compile
source locally. I don't want to resort to NFS for this.

What packages do I need to add to get to that point? Re-install is not an
option. I have gcc installed already.

Thanks,

Jeff Kennedy
