Mark@zang.com gave me exactly what I was looking for; a list of packages
needed (for any install) that would allow you to compile, including all the
requisite libraries. Below is the url of the list.

Subject: Compiling ability on user install
Salutations all,
I have a machine that has a user install and I want to be able to compile
source locally. I don't want to resort to NFS for this.
What packages do I need to add to get to that point? Re-install is not an
option. I have gcc installed already.
Thanks,
Jeff Kennedy
