Hi,
ORIGINAL QUESTION:
------------------
sendmail has a problem with certain hosts:
Mar 24 11:10:32 hera sendmail[1184]: IAA01095: to=REMOTEUSERNAME@image.dk,
ctladdr=LOCALUSERNAME (525/10), delay=02:46:38, xdelay=00:06:05, mailer=esmtp,
relay=www100.image.dk. [194.234.58.145], stat=Deferred: Connection timed out
with www100.image.dk.
This one is extremely nasty (after 4 or 5 days, the mail was finally NOT
delivered, although sendmail tried it every hour), but it occured also with
other destinations (there it took sometimes up to 1 day to deliver the mail).
QUESTION: somewhere in sendmail.cf there must be a timeout parameter, which
could be tuned - but which one is it ???
SOLUTION:
---------
Thanks to "Eric Lewandowski" <lewandow@cs.odu.edu>
and James Neal - HandiCAT <neal@ee.pdx.edu>
Unfortunately, none oof them both could offer a working solution. One answer
misunderstood me, it was believed, that I wanted to change the 1 hour retry
interval (which could be changed to 15 minutes with this command:
"/usr/lib/sendmail -bd -q15m &"), but I wanted to get rid of the timeouts, and
not change the retry interval. My fault, I should have been more precisely im my
question. The other other answer pointed me to the sendmail documentation (RTFM
?) at http://www.sendmail.org/m4/tweakingoptions.html, but the explanations
there don't say much more than the variable names in sendmail.cf themselves.
However, my ISP offered a much more comfortable solution: I addded their mail
host as a smarthost for sendmail, and now THEY are responsible for delivering
our non local mail !! That's only fair, because we pay enough money for that...
And obviously, their mail system does not suffer from timeouts.
Thanks,
Stefan
