I solved the problem myself, but one person did try to help, so here's the
summary. I'm embarrassed to post a summary for this one, because the problem
was due to my stupidity ...
The Solaris 7 system is a new system with nothing on it but the OS. I was
logging in to install gcc, Perl, etc. I had ftp problems, because I was
trying to move files to /home. Apparently, the automounter is running. I
can't create files in /home, even when I'm not using ftp. If I try, I get
the "Operation not applicable" message.
