Hi everyone,

Thanks for the help from Richard Felkins, Bill Hebert & Larry Chin, who
pointed me in the right direction. I executed the following command listed
on the sendmail website, which checks the system & gives a summary of what
is wrong.

sendmail -v -d44.4 -bv postmaster

The output was as below :

safefile(/etc/sendmail.cf, uid=0, gid=0, flags=6000, mode=400):
safedirpath(/etc, uid=0, gid=0, flags=6000):
        [dir /etc] mode 40775
        [uid 0, nlink 1, stat 100444, mode 400] OK
safefile(/etc/mail/relay-domains, uid=0, gid=0, flags=6580, mode=400):
safedirpath(/etc/mail, uid=0, gid=0, flags=6580):

        [dir /etc] Group writable directory
safedirpath(/var/spool/mqueue, uid=0, gid=0, flags=0):
        [dir /var] mode 40775
        [dir /var/spool] mode 40775
safefile(/etc/mail/aliases.dir, uid=0, gid=0, flags=584, mode=400):
safedirpath(/etc/mail, uid=0, gid=0, flags=584):
        [dir /etc] mode 40775
        [dir /etc] Group writable directory
dbm map "Alias0": unsafe map file /etc/mail/aliases

safefile(/etc/mail/aliases, uid=0, gid=1, flags=584, mode=400):

postmaster... deliverable: mailer local, user postmaster

This indiacted that the problem was that the /etc directory was group
writable. on setting it to 755, sendmail now works.

Thanks again,

Subject: Sendmail 8.9.3 error

Hi everyone,

I have a Sun E450 to be configured as a web server. I have downloaded
sendmail 8.9.3 since it is more secure. After compiling with gcc, I have
moved the sendmail binary & the cf file to the respective directories. I now
get the error below when I try to send a mail, even to a user on the local
machine. I see this error during the system boot also.

dbm map "Alias0": unsafe map file /etc/mail/aliases

Did I miss out something I should have done ? What does the error exactly
mean ?

Thanks,
