SUMMARY: Cannot restore /usr from backup I & II

Thanks for all the help. The problem with the incessant rebooting was a
little line in /etc/system which I missed:
rootdev=/pseudo/md@0:0,10,blk

Once I commented this line out, I rebooted fine with no mirrors and was
able to rebuild them from scratch. Thanks again!
