My original message is at the bottom.

I got too many responses to list here. Several people had the right
general idea that I had a bad shell script in /etc/rcS.d, but I still
would have spent hours trying to find the cause of the problem if not
for (drumroll, please)

*Alan Reichert*

who correctly guessed that someone (not me, or I might have known what
the problem was) had recently installed Checkpoint Firewall-1 v3.0b on
the system. It has a broken installation process that renders the system
unbootable if you don't apply fixes before installing. What I find
unconscionable is that, although Checkpoint explains how to fix the
problem on one of their well-hidden web pages, you can't download a
needed file from that page. It says:

"Using the regular Check Point support channels, please contact your
direct FireWall-1 reseller that will provide you with a patch, a new
"setbootsec" file, to this problem."

With support like that, we may decide to change vendors. Luckily for us,
Alan e-mailed the file to me, and all is well.

Subject: Boot error

Howdy all,

I have a Sun that won't boot. During the boot sequence it puts out the
following messages:

/sbin/rcS: syntax error at line 142: ')' unexpected

INIT: Cannot create /var/adm/utmp or /var/adm/utmpx

INIT: failed write of utmpx entry: " "

INIT: failed write of utmpx entry: " "

I booted off the CDROM and mounted the disk. The /sbin/rcS file seems
okay (not that I would know) and has not been modified. There don't seem
to be any disk errors. Any and all suggestions are welcome. Thanks, and
I'll summarize.
