Summary: strange ppp behavior

The answer is the MTU(maximum transmission rate) for the interface ipdptp0 is
set to 1500 by default
which is the the largest possible unit of data that can be sent on a given
physical medium, in this case ethernet.
it appears not to be a problem for most sites(espn and sun not withstanding).
Setting it down to 500 with the ifconfig command corrected the problem for my
ppp dialup connection.
