First of all, I would like to thank everyone who went out of their way to
help me solve this problem. Thank you all very much, you know who you are! :)
In my original post, I wrote that I had two CD-ROMs, SONY CDU-76S and
MATSHITA CR-532-B, and could not get them to boot on a SUN SPARCstation
1+, EEPROM Rev. 1.3.
Most of you suggested I should check for a 512KB transfer rate jumper or
find a CD-ROM which is known to support this standard.
Following up on this, I checked the CD-ROM FAQ at
http://saturn.tlug.org/suncdfaq/suncds.htm
I have taken the time to compile a list of CD-ROMs which were described as
being compatible with, and work across all Sun machines without any
modifications except closing a jumper where noted.
Before I proceed with the list, here is the solution:
I looked at the back of my CD-ROM and there was a jumper labeled "TOP" I
closed this jumper and did the following:
ok probe-scsi
[listing of devices, CD @ DEV0 TARGET6]
ok boot sd(0,6,2)
and the booting process went on it's merry way.
As some of you suggested I also tried
ok boot sd(3,6,2)
and it seemed to work fine as well, although I never
finished installing it with those parameters. I decided to go with
recommended parameters instead (0,6,2).
For the sake of convenience I included a list of CD-ROMs that should work
with all Suns:
Compaq SCSI-2 2x CD-ROM (OEM Panasonic CR-503B)
DEC RRD40, RRD42, RRD43, RRD45, RRD46 (RRD46 is OEM Toshiba XM-5701TA)
IBM SCSI-2 2x CD-ROM (OEM Panasonic CR-503B)
Laser Magnetic Storage International Company CM234
Matshita CR-532B
Panasonic CR-503B
Panasonic CD-506B
Pioneer 4.4x SCSI-2
Pioneer DRM600/DRM604X
Plextor 4x/6x/8x/10x/12x
Toshiba XM-5701TA
Yamaha CDR-400t (this is a CD-ROM burner)
Many of these models can be found at <http://www.ebay.com>, ranging
anywhere from $20 to $60 USD.
Finally, many thanks to Mike Frisch <http://saturn.tlug.org/~mfrisch/> for
his excellent CD-ROM FAQ resource.
