The answer appears to be that when root quits openwin, it does not remove
the files
/tmp/.X11-pipe
/tmp/.X11-unix
Removing these files or making them world-writeable does the trick.
Says Val: "This is a known bug (i don't remember the bugID) but you can
find it in SunSOLVE."
