Thanks to everybody who responded so quickly with the fixes, if not with
the underlying cause of this problem. My problem was that after an
upgrade from 2.5.1 to 2.6 my /tmp file permissions had changed from 1777
to 755 and even when I reset them, the system would change it back after
reboot. I have to assume something to do with the upgrade caused this,
since I've configured about 300 Sun (and IBM and HP) workstations and
servers and I've never run into this. Casper Dik had the solution
first; boot single user, change the tmp directory permissions before tmp
is mounted, reboot and it's been fine since them. Unless I experience
it again on my next upgrade I'll assume it was just some ghost in the
machine to make the attempt to get this ready to go by this morning as
much of a panic as possible.
