I did just this on a system I used to admin. If I remember correctly, I
just echoed a default selection to $HOME/.dt/sessions/lastsession
Beware that this should be exactly the same as the session specified in
the dtlogin config files. And, there is also no line break in the end of
the file. I didn't implement it so that the user got their preferred
window manager, I just copied the entry for CDE to lastsession.
You could probably do this by keeping a backup of their preferred section
somewhere, and copy that to lastsession instead. This copy could be done
in the regular startup scripts I believe.

Launch what ever apps/windows you want to run when you log in.
Arrange the windows like you would like them to come up when you log in.
Run the style manager ( the icon on the CDE bar that has a mouse, color
pallet, and TTT on it)
Then click on the startup icon in the style manager.
Click on "Set home session..."
Next select the "Return to home session" from the radio group "At Login"
Click OK.

The original question dealt with resetting the CDE environment to
something besides the last session (since, in my case, there was an
optional session to reboot the system).
