Thanks to all those who replied. There were 2 things I needed to do.
1) Get the most recent version of top. It's available from:
ftp.groupsys.com:/pub/top/top-3.5beta7.tar.gz
2) Use a recent version of gcc. I was tring to compile with 2.6.3 and
it failed. Installing 2.8.1 gcc fixed that problem.
There is also a pre-compiled version (which I didn't test) at:
