To sum up, the original problem was that I have a machine that cannot
get display permission with `DISPLAY=:0.0' but instead needs to have
`DISPLAY=machine:0.0'. Turns out that this is a bug introduced by a
stupid patch. The culprit is patch 103566-27.
My fix was to change the local server line in the Xservers file from
`:0 <stuff>' to `machine:0 <stuff>', since it is that first part of
the Xserver line which is used to automatically set the DISPLAY
variable. The one relevant response I got, with the patch number and
everything, seems to have snuck away from my inbox. My apologies to
the sender, since I obviously can't provide his name, now. :-)
