SUMMARY: SUN SPARC printer configuration

My summary is so late because I was not able to resolve the problem. I took
Celeste Stokely's guidance and used a null MODEM cable. I could not get the
printer to work from either serial port (through admintool). I went so far
as to take the SBUS card out of the SPARC 5 and install it in the SPARC 20
and use the original 10 meter cable with the 21 pin (small like SCSI pins)
connector. I'm guessing that didn't work because I didn't have the right
drivers on the SPARC 20 for the SBUS card to talk to the printer. In
reading through FAQ's and SUN Managers summaries, I read that SUN will not
be supporting the SUN SPARC printers with 2.6.

Below are the 2 responses I received and my original question:

>From Celeste Stokely (celeste@stokely.com) http://www.stokely.com - Home of
Unix Serial Port & Sysadm Resources:
If you hook up either a printer or a terminal to a Sun cpu serial port, you
need to use a null modem cable.

>From Hisashi T Fujinaka - htodd@fls.portland.or.us - Fuji Landscape Service:

I can't find the email but some of the old SPARCs had a hardware error in
the printer port. I know the SPARCclassic had it and I forgot what which big
SPARC (20 or 10) had the same problem. I think you can find this in the
archives. If this is the case, you have to have a new motherboard cross
shipped to you.

My original question:
Hey everybody,

I configured a SPARC 20 (SOLARIS 2.5.1) to be a print server for a SUN
printer via ADMINTOOL. I got the following message in
/var/spool/lp/logs/lpsched:

02/09 11:47:17: printer fault. type: write root, status: 14
msg: (Timed-out trying to open the printer port.)

lpstat -o shows me valid print jobs in the que.
lpstat -p says the printer is available and is printing.
I configured this as a serial printer and the default printer.
I know the printer and the cable are good.
There are no error messages on the printer display.

Does anybody know where I can find the port settings for this and do I need
a special cable such as a null MODEM cable to make this work? I will
summarize this and any other info anybody has to offer.

Thanks,
