SOLUTION:

Even though /usr/man indicated that man pages were installed, it would seem
that only a select few actually were (installation failed). The file handles were
there, but they were not clean. The solution was to go back and re-install the
man pages using:

# pkgadd -d . SUNWman

Then reconfigure the man page index file by running:

# catman -w
