So as not to enrage those who would defile non-summarizers, here goes...

I received responses from Mark Berlanger, Jeff Pokallus, and Stefan Voss,
all of whom provided good info, but not the solution. With their inputs I
was able, however to determine that the problem was that for some reason I
had the wrong links to the device in /dev/dsk and /dev/rdsk. When I fixed
them up (manually, boot -r couldn't get it right), everything seems to be
working now (at least gear can see the disk, I haven't tried burning a CD
yet :-)
