To summarize I tried rdump and it works just fine as you all suggested and that dump works only on UFS file systems and not on NFS filesystems.
Thanks for all the help.
Problem was
I have a Sparcstation 20 which is a NFS and NIS server.
The operating system is SunOS 4.1.4
I have about 20 NIS client machines all running SunOS 4.1.4
Dump works fine when the file systems mounted locally on the
server are backed up.
I run automounter on the server to access various file systems
When I try to dump an NFS file system I get an error as shown
below
DUMP: Cannot find block device 130, 25 DUMP: The ENTIRE dump is aborted.
Some users have their home directories on NIS client machines.
So if I cd ~user and run the following command
dump 0csf 14500 /dev/nrst24 .
(I have an 8mm data tape drive)
I get the following error
DUMP: Cannot find block device 130, 25 DUMP: The ENTIRE dump is aborted.
What should I do. Is there a solution for this or suggestions to backup up NFS filesystems using a differnet method are welcome.
End of problem
