Apologies to Jeff Wasilko---he answered the question about
automounting which spawned my own post, as opposed to asking it which
I mistakenly claimed. Monday must affect my cut and paste skills. :)
I asked what the heck /xfn was---it is one of the mount points used by
the automounter. Thanks to
Jeff Wasilko <jeffw@smoe.org>
James.E.Coby.Jr@cdc.com (James Coby)
David Thorburn-Gundlach <david@bae.uga.edu>
for their answers.
The short version is that /xfn is a filesystem access point to Sun's
Federated Naming Service. This is some sort of other namespace which
can be used, and I don't claim to understand what it does or why one
would use it. However, there are abunch of related manpages. Most of
them seem to assume that the reader already knows what FNS is, but
there is a fns(5) manpage which might be a good place to start. The
cross references lead to a bunch of manpages for implementation
functions and binaries which might help flesh things out.
I think the simple answer is, I don't use it, and could probably cut
it out of my automounting config...
