The response, as you can see, was overwhelming. The answers boiled down to
these:
Two main poings: Get reverse lookups going. I now have reverse lookups
going, but that didn't solve the problem.
The other main point is to get the DNS and BIND by Paul Albitz & Cricket
Liu 2nd edition from O'Reilly & Associates, Inc. I'll be getting that soon.
It turns out that the solution was this:
I set up my server to be the primary DNS server for my subnet, but to be a
secondary DNS server for the main company net. Now it's working. I just
wasn't getting the cache from the primary server. Another alternative is
to simply switch the order in resolv.conf and put the company primary DNS
server ahead of my secondary subnet DNS server.
