My original messages:
I get this message maybe once every couple of months and spent some time
tracking but came up empty handed. Does anyone know what it means? I am on
a Sparc 10 running 4.1.3.
This is in /var/log/syslog:
Dec 10 15:42:26 appsdev sendmail[1842]: NOQUEUE: SYSERR: cannot
chdir(/usr/spool/mqueue): Permission denied

Tom,
I would check your sendmail permissions. Sendmail has to be set UID root
to be able to cd to /usr/spool/mqueue. Here is an ls -lg of my sendmail.
$ ls -gl /usr/lib/sendmail
-r-sr-x--x 1 root staff 172032 Oct 5 1995 /usr/lib/sendmail

Your sendmail is setuid root?
Maybe someone runs it with an alternate config file, in this case
sendmail will give up its root priviledges (there are some other
"insecure" options for which sendmail won't run as root if called
by a normal user).
The fix:
It seems if I use the lower case mail with the subject (-s) option I get this
error.
