Well my memory was completely wrong and I should have RTFM'd the man page on

You change the passwd line in /etc/nsswitch.conf to compat, add +(or -)username
to /etc/passwd and then run pwconv.

Thanks to following (and anyone whos' reply I have not yet received):-

Subject: Restricting NIS logins on Solaris 2

Dear Sun Managers,

I have looked through the FAQ and cannot see the answer to this and, if my
memory serves me correctly, I don't think it is possible but if anyone knows
how to do it they'll be on this list.

Is there any way to restrict access to a limited set of NIS user accounts under
Solaris 2.5.1?

In SunOS 4.x you could do this by adding

to the bottom of the /etc/passwd file (instead of +::0:0:::).
