My original question was:

I need to set up a machine to autoboot into an openwindows session and
have to keyboard and mouse connected... BUT ALSO, have a console
connection via ttya.

Well the answer is:

EEPROM settings...

You need to set the input and output devices to ttya... The machine
will boot and at the end I have a S99autoboot startup that
runs a:
su - user /usr/openwin/bin &

Notice that it must be run in the background otherwise ttya will be hung
until the openwin session dies... but now I have a nice login prompt...
