I asked if I was going to be able to upgrade my SPARCstation 20 Solaris 2.5 to
an Ultra 2, as I was looking to basically just move the disks (or disk images)
to the new machine. I asked this as I prepare for the upgrade and thus do not
have the new system available for testing, nor any of its accompanying
documentation.
The answer is no because Ultra 2 HW is not supported until Solaris 2.5.1.
A secondary issue is that the Ultra 2 was probably purchased with a Solaris
client license when I need a Solaris server license to obtain the bundle of
layered product licenses for the software run on this server. This problem I am
working with my customer as they may already own a Solaris 2.5.1 server license
for a different Ultra 2 system which is NOT using any of the additional
facilities/capabilities present in Solaris server.

My customer has ordered some new systems, the most important of which is a
replacement server which will be taking the server load currently handled by a
SPARCstation 20. Due to the manner in which it was purchased, there may be
licensing issues pushing us to run Solaris 2.5 on the new server. BUT, after
reading a few things on Solaris 2.6, 2.5.1, and the 2.5.1 4/97 releases, I
started wondering if this configuration can run:
Ultra-2 dual 200 Mhz CPU with Creator 3d graphics --> Solaris 2.5
TIA,
