Thanks to all who responded. Sun-managers can't be beat for a quick informed response.

Two best solutions appear to be:

tcsh - csh super shell with timeout feature. ftp.ee.cornell.edu/pub/tcsh

idled - idle connection monitor. ftp.cs.hope.edu/pub/idled

tcsh will not fit my solution since I am married to ksh, so I will investigate idled.
