The answer is:
Use SSH instead (available from www.ssh.fi).
I'd been avoiding it because we didn't want to run the "r" and I could
find no Macintosh clients.
It was pointed out to me that unlike the r-commands, ssh does permit
an encrypted rlogin like session, including changing username and
requiring the user to provide a password. (which could be reusable, or
skey, or SecurID, or ......)
As for the Mac client, I found one at www.DataFellows.com
