My original post sought a way to hack the SunOS 4.1.x kernel (possibly
using "adb" or hacking the source) to allow for more than the 256 file
descriptors for the Apache web server.
We are running several virtual hosts (with a VERY LOW system load and
plenty of memory) on apache and we've run into a limit where we cannot add
any more due to a file descriptor problem.
The answers I received had a lot to do with Solaris (sorry for not posting
my OS more clearly) and the use of the limit command on SunOS 4.
I have been lead to believe that I am beat, that I cannot add any more
descriptors. This, to say the least, s*cks. I guess SunOS 4.1.x has a HARD
limit of 256 file descriptors.
Thanks to all who replied:

And all the others who replied to my similar question on the use of
"ulimit" on SunOS 4.1.x
