First, apologies for the delay, but it actually did take some time to
resolve this one.
The short answer is: I installed a newer version of gcc (2.7.2.1) and
everything compiled & installed fine. Most everyone reported little
problem in installing it; a few people suggested problems with the gcc
libraries.
