SUMMARY: sendmail incompatible with SLMail ???

Finally got the answer to this one from SLMail tech support.

Thanks very much to all those that answered. I tried all the suggestions but
none of them fixed the problem.

The problem was a bug in the SLMail program (version 2.4 and version 2.3 - for
both windows NT and windows 95 versions).

This meant my unix box (solaris 2.5 runnning sendmail 8.8.4) couldn't
communicate correctly with these pc's that were using it as a smart mail host.

There is a pre-beta test version of SLMail NT 2.5 available which fixed the
problem. The windows 95 version won't be available for 2 more weeks.

Thanks again for all the good suggestions
Marina

***** ORIGINAL QUESTION ******

Does anyone know of any incompatibility between Eric Allman's sendmail (8.8.4)
installed on Solaris 2.5 and SLMail 95 version 2.4 running on a pc?
And if so, how to fix it?

The SLMail machine somehow sends mail through my unix box (falcon) - because if
it can't get through to the destination address, I can see it sitting in the
"mailq" on falcon.

If users with email accounts on the SLMail machine send mail which :

        - has incorrect email address so it bounces back
        - requires a receipt
        - can't be delivered for 5 days so it bounces back

then the SLMail machine complains about a Data Format Error (see example below)

Sending new mail to anyone at the SLmail machine causes no problems.

There is an example failed message below, where the mail could not be delivered
for 5 days, so sat on falcon and was then returned. The only interaction was
between SL Mail and the unix box falcon so that's why I think the
incompatiblitiy might be between these two systems.

This problem is also happening to another pc running SLMail 95 version 2.4 that
also sends mail through falcon.

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks
Marina

(in this example, "courier" and "info.tas.gov.au" are actually referring to the
same machine, a pc with SLMail 95. "falcon" is my unix box.
