I've noticed the following error message in the log files on several of our
servers and workstations:
Apr 11 09:01:00 <hostname> syslog: yp_all - transport level create failure:
RPC: Rpcbind failure - RPC: Timed out
Also, all of the machines that are producing this error message are
receiving their NIS maps from the same NIS slave server - a Solaris 2.5.1
box with the NIS Kit 1.2 installed. It also has patch 103053 installed.
The other NIS servers including the master are currently SunOS 4.X machines.
I plan to move the NIS master role to a Solaris 2.X machine in the very near
future.
I did search through the Answerbook but was not able to determine a cause
for the error message. Rpcinfo using various options does not show anything
unusual that I am aware of. There does not seem to be any functional
problems as a result of this error; however, I would like to know what is
causing it just in case it is more of a problem than I realize.

Responses:
1. Try changing the amount of file descriptors to 1000. Either set the
ulimit for the process or change the the global /etc/systems file.
set rlim_fd_cur=1024
2. I've seen this before and it is usually an indication of a
(perhaps brief) network failure at a lower level. The earlier
versions of NIS just didn't print this type of message. Usually
if things are still working ok then it can be safely ignored.
Running the master NIS server on Solaris 2.x seems to be quite
stable and I have worked at a couple of sites doing this with no
problems.

So far, I have taken the advice given in response number two and ignored the
error message because, as I indicated in my original message, there does not
seem to be any functional problem. However, I am doing some further
investigating into the file descriptor suggestion and may experiment with it
( I ordered a copy of Sun Performance and Tuning: SPARC and Solaris by
Adrian Cockcroft).
