Many thanks for the replies. The answer is that "+:" is not needed unless you
are using
files:compat
in /etc/nsswitch.conf

Subject: NIS on Solaris2
Hi,
With the use of /etc/nsswitch.conf in Solaris2, is it still necessary
to provide the ' +:*: ' entry in /etc/passwd and /etc/group ??.
I had thought that these entries told NIS to look to the NIS server if, after
searching the file, the relevant entry was not found. But, from what I can see,
/etc/nsswitch.conf now provdies this functionality.
Thanks
J
