I'm afraid the news is not good and pretty sure it's the drive's problem.
When getting a new drive, you may consider leaving the stacker on to
avoid reprogramming the robot arm.
In short, get a new drive, replace, have the stacker manual ready if you
have to reprogram. Follow this procedure and you'll get less headache.
Comment: I opened it up, but did not want to risk damaging anything (thanks
for the warning, Chan), so I shipped the whole unit to West Coast Computer
Exchange. Their prices seem pretty reasonable.

This may sound stupid, but are you using data quality tapes?
Comment: Not stupid at all. I am.

It is dead. I have the same drive, and it was giving similar error messages.
I sent it to two different repair places, and it is still broken.
Comment: I hope I have better luck at this.
