After I posted my first summary saying that Sun told me it couldn't be done, I got a couple of more emails showing me it can be done!!! Thanks go to Matthew
Stier <Matthew.Stier@MCI.Com> for this.
Thanks also to Jerry Springer <springer@aitsun500.tci.com>.
My original question:
=====================
We are receiving a few errors on a certain drive. The errors are shown below.
I know which drive is the culprit but which slice on the drive is the specific
problem. The drive layout is also shown below. I think the info I'm looking
for is contained in the 'WARNING' line in the error output but I forgot how to
read it. Any help would be appreciated.
System info:

End of original Question
(BTW, I forgot to mention that only slices 1 & 3 are being used(mounted). So the cylinder mismatch
on slice 2 is not important.)
Here is the formula derived from the drive parameters above.
nsect = 168 sectors(blocks)/head
nheads = 20 heads/cylinder
ncyl = 5266 total cylinders
168 * 20 * 5266 = 17,693,760 total sectors(blocks)
>From the error messages above, my bad block was 12821829. So...
168 * 20 = 3360 sectors(blocks)/cylinder
12821829 (block #) / 3360 =~ 3816 cylinder number
Cylinder # 3816 is in slice 3 which goes from cylinder 1160 to 5265.
So I will have to fsck slice 3.
Many thanks to those who gave me info. Just goes to show you that the best people aren't the ones at
the end of the tech support line.
