This might have provided a solution, but at this point my frustration
tolerance had been exceeded..

What I did:

Dumped the serial port idea altogether and used the parallel port (included
with the Ultra - uses a DB25). Worked just fine (after deleting the original
printer entry for the serial device and reinstalling it with admintool). It
didn't print Postscript files... but, then again, you need a PS cartridge
installed for that :^)...

Oh yes, this HP 5 *does* have a DB9 intended for it's serial port.
