I got a number of responses refering to scsi cable length, and termination.
The closest was from Matthew Stier

It turns out the hard drive power/communication assembly had a fractured
sodering point located at the power plug from the powersupply. Wiggleing the
wire would cause the lights on the hard drives to go out and was the traced to
the actual plug.
