hi
got three quick answers, all presuming that
newfs had not been done on main partition, but on minor ones.
i checked with disk supplier
(who had done the partitioning for us as part of their service)
and this was indeed so.
So, we redid the newfs operation, with success.

---- >From glenn@sammy.pls.ov.com Tue Feb 4 17:16:04 1997 I'd bet you ran newfs on /dev/rdsk/c0t1d0s5 ?? --- It looks like someone newfs'd slice 5 instead of slice 2. I'm guessing you'll find filesystems on slices 6 and 7 also.Kevin W. Thomas Sun System Administrator & Meteorologist National Severe Storms Laboratory Norman, Oklahoma --- >From guy@netapp.com Tue Feb 4 17:40:27 1997 Had you done a "newfs" on partition 2 before doing that?
Or had you, instead, done a "newfs" on partition 5?
If you'd done a "newfs" on partition 5, the file system is on partition 5, which has only 1.41GB and thus gives you a little less than 1.41GB of free space.
Partitions 2 and 5 both start at the beginning of the disk, so if you create a file system on partition 5 and then try to mount partition 2, it happens to work - but, as the file system was created on partition 5, not on partition 2, it only has as much space in it as partition 5 has.
To use partition 2 as a file system, you must unmount the file system on partitiion 2, and then do a "newfs" on partition 2. ----
>From Mike.Sullivan@Eng.Sun.COM Tue Feb 4 19:04:50 1997 Did you 'newfs' slice 2, or did you newfs slice 5? It looks like you newfs'd slice 5 (1.4 gig FS), then mounted slice2.
If you _really_ want to use the whole disk as a UFS filesystem, it would be good to at least remove the other partitions.
WITH ORIGINAL STATEMENT OF PROBLEM:
we have enterprise 3000 with 4GB internal disk with following partition table:
format c0t1d0 partition> print Current partition table (original): Total disk cylinders available: 3902 + 2 (reserved cylinders) Part Tag Flag Cylinders Size Blocks 0 unassigned wm 0 0 (0/0/0) 0 1 unassigned wm 0 0 (0/0/0) 0 2 unassigned wm 0 - 3901 4.24GB (3902/0/0) 8884854 3 unassigned wm 0 0 (0/0/0) 0 4 unassigned wm 0 0 (0/0/0) 0 5 unassigned wm 0 - 1295 1.41GB (1296/0/0) 2950992 6 unassigned wm 1296 - 2591 1.41GB (1296/0/0) 2950992 7 unassigned wm 2592 - 3901 1.42GB (1310/0/0) 2982870
but after mounting, with vfstab statement: /dev/dsk/c0t1d0s2 /dev/rdsk/c0t1d0s2 /W1 ufs 2 yes -
BUT...the df -k command produces:
Filesystem kbytes used avail capacity Mounted on /dev/dsk/c0t1d0s2 1387350 1 1248619 1% /W1
where i expected the 4.24GB to show instead of the 1.387350 GB
