Thank you much for the quick responses (and gentle jabs). If I have
omitted anyone from the list below it is strictly due to timing.
Everyone was very supportive.

The two most populer sites for obtaining a pre-built GNU C compiler
are:

    http://smc.vnet.net/solaris_2.5.html
    sunsite.unc.edu.

Also suggested are the following:

The url for GNU software is as follow:
        http://www.gnu.org/order/ftp.html
        http://smc.vnet.net/solaris_2.5.html
        http://smc.vnetr.net/solaris_2.5.html for binaries
        http://gamma.magnet.fsu.edu/download/gnu

Recent GCC binaries can be retrieved from the following FTP sites:
0) ftp://prep.ai.mit.edu/pub/gnu/sparc-sun-solaris2/
1) ftp://ftp.lanet.lv/pub/unix/solaris2/
2) ftp://nic.switch.ch/mirror/gnu-sparc-solaris/
This site is said to contain several programs/libraries for Solaris2.X.
(i.e. gcc, emacs, gdb, libg++, gawk, diff, make, sed)
3) ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/gnu/solaris-pkgs/
4) ftp.quintus.com/pub/GNU/sparc/
