My original questions were:

I have a Sparc20 with SunOS 4.1.3_U1.

I am looking for an external CD-R and Software.

Do you have any suggestion to what brand of CD-R and Software to buy,
and where I can get them.

I have received two answers. Many thanks to John Stoffel and Satish
Somanath for their replies.

It really depends on what you want to do with your system and how many
discs you want to make. For example, we have a Young Minds
(www.ymi.org) CDStudio system with Yamaha 4x writer connected to an
Ultra140 which is also acting as our central file server. We use this
setup to burn masters and one-off discs. We then have a standalone
Hoeie Sangyo 4 Yamaha 4x drive CD-R replicator to copy masters onto
other discs for software distribution.

The CDStudio is a nice device in that once you have downloaded your
image to it's internal hard-drive, you don't have to worry about any
load being placed on your Unix box while writing the actual CD. You
also don't have to worry about spike loads on the Unix box causing
buffer underruns when writing the CD-R, which turns it into a pretty
coaster to put drinks on.

If all you really need to do is make one time discs on a lightly
loaded system, then any Unix software (Gear makes some stuff that's ok
from what I hear) and a 2x or 4x writer should work ok. Remember
though that you'll want to dedicate plenty of disk space for the
mastering process on your system, and to do the actuall writing when
the system is nice and quiet since you don't want buffer under-runs
when writing.

If you're interested in going this rounte, drop me a line and I'll
pass on the name of the vendor we got the CDStudio from.

Stick with Sun CDROM. If you noticed there are several compatability issues
with non Sun CDROMs discussed in this email group. Contact your local Sun
Vendor for hardware and software. Or check http://www.sun.com.
Sun CDROMs are made by Toshiba. What kind of software are you looking for?
